OGPE Research Institute was founded in 1953, and then was relocated with the university from Beijing and Shandong to current beautiful coastal city, Qingdao. To date, OGPE Research Institute has become one of major departments in the School of Petroleum Engineering, contributing great outcome on research and education for the school and university. OGPE Research Institute was granted the honor of 1st Excellent Teaching Organization of the university in 2004 ranked first.

OGPE Research Institute has 25 faculty members including 12 professors, 10 associate professors, and 4 lecturers. The team of the institute is an excellent group involving many outstanding persons of provincial and national level. The professors of OGPE Institute undertakes the teaching and education task for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The courses provided by the institute for undergraduate includes 8 items concerning Oil Production Engineering, Natural Gas Production and Safety and other 6 selective courses. The courses for postgraduate include Design and Practice of Oil and Gas Production Engineering, Well Stimulation Theory and Technology, Oil and Gas Well Completion and Lifting, Theory and Technique of Flow Control in Oil and Gas Production, Multiphase Flow and Rheology in Petroleum Engineering, etc.

OGPE Research Institute perform scientific research on oil and gas production engineering, mainly concerning multiphase flow, well completion, artificial lifting and well stimulation. The institute focus on 5 research areas and constructs corresponding research groups, which are Multiphase Flow and Intelligent Artificial Lift team, Flow-Solid Control and Productional Completion team, Reservoir Stimulation Team, Foam Stimulation and Heavy Oil Recovery team, and Intelligent Oil Production Engineering team. These teams has undertaken research project of 973, 863, National Nature Foundation and National Key Projects. Besides, lots of research projected are cooperated with CNOOC, CNPC, and SINOPEC.

Multiphase Flow and Intelligent Artificial Lift team is the traditional advantages and distinctive research directions of the Oil and Gas Production Engineering Research Institute. The research content mainly includes two major fields: (1) the flow mechanism of multiphase mixtures in pipes and complex fracture network occurred during the petroleum production, stimulation and separation process; (2) the basic theory and methods and engineering application technology of efficient artificial lift, real-time intelligent monitoring and controlling for artificial lift wells, new lifting technology and new equipment. This direction has won 3 National Science and Technology Progress Awards, their overall technology is at the leading level in China and has a certain influence internationally. At present, this direction has 3 professors, 3 associate professors, and the team leader is Professor Chen Dechun, the core members include Wang Haiwen, Zhang Liming, Wang Weiyang, Xue Jianquan, Liu Chenwei, Bao bingsheng. In recent years, they have won 14 provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological achievement awards, and their research achievements have been widely applied in onshore and offshore oil fields, and have achieved good results.

Production and Sand Control Completion Laboratory (PSCCL) is a research and education team working on oil and gas filed sand control and solid management. PSCCL focus on oil and gas production engineering, sand production and sand control, water control, solid control and management, concerning basic theories, technologies, methods, equipment and software. The research area of PSCCL covers loose sandstone, unconventional oil and gas, deep carbonate, coalbed methane, natural gas hydrate, thermal well, underground gas storage. The head of PSCCL is professor Changying Dong. The team includes 1 professor, 1 vice professor, 3 young teachers and more than 20 postgraduates. PSCCL construct united laboratory with CPOE and COSL. PSCCL is equipped with series of experimental apparatus involving sand production simulation, sand control optimization, sand carrying simulation, frac-pack well stimulation, integrity evaluation. the laboratory employs apparatus more than 20 installations with 300 m2.  The laboratory has the full ability to accomplish the experiments on sand control and fluid-solid management. PSCCL has published 7 monographs on sold control and management.  PSCCL also published technical articles more than 120 items, and retrieved by SCI/EI more than 60 items. PSCCL was authorized 30 China patents, and 16 software. All of the work improves the development of sand control and solid management in China. The homepage of PSCCL team is www.sandcontrol.com.cn/english.

The research group of Foam Stimulation and Heavy Oil Recovery has three professors (Zhaomin Li, Binfei Li and Songyan Li), one associate professor (Chao Zhang) and 45 graduate students. The research interests focus on the following three directions: (1) foam stability theory, novel foam formula, foam flow in wellbore and reservoir, foam generation equipment, and foam application in oil & gas field development; (2) heavy oil thermal and cold production methods, gas assisted heavy oil production, SAGD and SAGP, flue gas utilization, and heavy oil in-situ upgrading; (3) CO2 flooding, CO2 huff and puff, CO2 channeling control method, CO2 diffusion, and CO2 storage underground. The group has authored more than 500 peer reviewed journal publications, 50 patents and 6 books. The group constructed the Shandong Engineering Research Center of Carbon Dioxide Utilization and Storage, and the UPC—COSL Joint Laboratory on Heavy Oil Recovery with more than 30 experimental equipment and 300 m2 laboratory. The technologies of foam stimulation and heavy oil recovery developed by the research group have been applied in more than 15000 wells in Chinese and oversea oilfields for the recent 20 years.

Reservoir Stimulation Theory and Technology Team is a dedicated research and education group focused on advancing reservoir stimulation techniques. The team works on various areas including: (1) Hydraulic fracturing fracture propagation, proppant transport mechanisms, and fracturing design. (2) Rock deformation and acid-rock reaction mechanisms, with a focus on acidification and acid fracturing design. (3) Development and evaluation of materials for fracturing and acidizing. (4) Exploration of theories and techniques for transforming under strong dynamic loading. The team is led by Zhanqing Qu, with core members including Luo Mingliang, Qi Ning, Guo Tiankui, Wu Feipeng, Liu Jing, Chen Ming etc. In recent years, the team has undertaken more than 10 national-level projects, over 60 enterprise projects, and received more than 10 provincial and ministerial-level awards. They have established a comprehensive reservoir stimulation experimental evaluation system, featuring independent research platforms for fracturing fracture simulation, acid-rock reaction, material evaluation, and high-dynamic-load stimulation mechanics assessment. The team has trained numerous experts and scholars in the field and will continue to drive innovation in reservoir stimulation theory and technology.

The research interests of Intelligent Oil Production Engineering Group focus on data model, intelligent algorithms for oil and gas production, software development. The principal investigator of the group is Yiyong Sui. We are dedicated to studying the patterns in the production data to develop new intelligent methods. The ultimate goal is to provide a new intelligent means for oil and gas production and promote sustainable development of oil fields by the application of new methods.
