The Research Institute of Reservoir Engineering is one of the main departments of the School of Petroleum Engineering, originating from the Petroleum Department of Tsinghua University in 1953, which has been renamed Reservoir Engineering Teaching and Research Laboratory and the Department of Reservoir Engineering successively, and then reconstructed into the Institute of Reservoir Engineering in 2018. After more than70 years of unremitting efforts of several generations of staff, the institute of Reservoir Engineering has become an important part of the national double first-class construction and 985 project superior discipline innovation platform. The Institute of Reservoir Engineering has a team of teachers with high moral character and excellent business skills. At present, there are 43 faculty members, including 17 professors, 14 doctoral supervisors, and 17 people have been awarded the titles of National Outstanding Youth Fund, New Century Hundred Million Talents Project, Shandong Province Outstanding Youth Fund and other titles above provincial levels.
The institute has adhered to the educational concept of thick foundation, heavy practice and strong quality, and has provided 33 courses for undergraduates, postgraduates and international students, such as Petroleum Physics, Mechanics of Fluid Flow in Porous Media , Oil Reservoir Engineering, Gas Reservoir Engineering, etc. Three national first-class courses and four provincial first-class courses have been approved, cultivating a large number of high-level talents for the field of oil and gas reservoir development engineering.
The Institute focuses on the major strategic needs of national energy, aims at the frontiers of science and technology, and strengthens innovative and leading scientific and technological research in basic theory and applied research. The main research directions include: oil and gas seepage theory and methodology, intelligent oil and gas field development theory and methodology, deep oil and gas reservoir development methodology and technology, unconventional oil and gas reservoir development methodology and technology, high water cut reservoir development methodology and enhanced recovery technology, heavy oil reservoir development methodology and technology, natural gas hydrate development theory and methodology, Carbon dioxide utilization and storage (CCUS), underground energy storage theory and methodology, Theory and method of in-situ transformation of underground resources, etc.
The Institute of Reservoir Engineering is globally oriented, open and inclusive, and has established long-term and stable cooperative relationships with many famous higher education institutions, first-class research institutes and well-known companies abroad. It actively organizes and participates in high-level international academic conferences, and employs famous foreign scholars as part-time professors to participate in teaching and scientific research. In recent years, the internationalization of the Institute's faculty has gradually deepened, the results of international scientific research cooperation have continuously appeared, the international influence and competitiveness have been continuously improved, and an all-round, multi-level and wide-ranging pattern of international cooperation and exchange has been formed.
