The oil and gas well engineering research institute derives from the oldest department in the school of petroleum engineering at China University of Petroleum. Its predecessor is the drilling engineering teaching and research group established in 1953, which was renamed as the department of drilling engineering in 2005. The department of drilling engineering became oil and gas well engineering research institute in 2018 to stress its focus on research activities. The oil and gas well engineering discipline is recognized as a national key discipline in 2001.
The main research fields include rock physics and rock mechanics, fluid mechanics in oil and gas wells, drillstring mechanics, downhole process control, drilling and completion fluid, cementing and well completion. Since its establishment, the department (institute) has undertaken more than 150 projects of national and provincial levels, which won 2 first prizes of national science and technology progress, 30 prizes of provincial level and numerous prizes of company level. Over 10 books and 500 academic papers (indexed by Web of Science and/or Engineering Village) have been published by members of the institute.
31 faculty members are currently working in the oil and gas well engineering research institute, including 12 professors, 15 associate professors, and 4 lecturers.
