On June 24th, the headquarters of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) conducted a comprehensive evaluation of SPE student chapters worldwide and decided to award the SPE Student Chapter at China University of Petroleum (East China) the Student Chapter Excellence Award for the year 2023. The award recognizes the innovative work and dedication over the past year. It marks the second consecutive year that our university's SPE student chapter has received this award and is the only student organization in China to receive this accolade in 2023.

  The Student Chapter Excellence Award is established by the SPE, the organization of the largest petroleum research workers globally. It is awarded annually and consists of regional preliminary evaluation and global final evaluation stages. The award is given to SPE student chapters that are at the forefront internationally in areas such as chapter development, technical dissemination, professional development, member participation, and community responsibility. The award has high international recognition and is challenging to achieve. In 2023, a total of 428 SPE student chapters from the Asia-Pacific, North America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and the Caribbean regions participated in the evaluation for this award. Among the 52 university SPE student chapters that received the Student Chapter Excellence Award were China University of Petroleum (East China), Stanford University in the United States, Imperial College London in the UK, Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas, and Trisakti University in Indonesia. Ten chapters from the Asia-Pacific region received this award, with our university being the only one from China.Furthermore, this year, for the first time, the SPE headquarters classified the award-winning chapters into four levels based on the number of chapter members, resource quality, and level of proactivity: Small, Medium, Large, and Mega. This increased the difficulty of receiving the award. Our university's SPE student chapter was recognized as a Large-level chapter due to its professional advantages, chapter accumulation, and distinctive development, entering the ranks of top-tier chapter construction.

Established in July 2013, the SPE Student Chapter at China University of Petroleum (East China) aims to create a window for international academic exchanges and serve as a base for innovative talent development, contributing to the internationalization of the university. The chapter organizes branded activities such as Petroleum Summit: China International Student Petroleum Forum, International Outstanding Young Scholars Forum, and Oil Talks, conducts internal activities like petroleum knowledge competitions, paper contests, roundtable forums, and cultural salons, and arranges for students to participate in international events such as the SPE PetroBowl and SPE Paper Contest. They also engage in academic exchanges and technological competitions in countries like the United States, Russia, Australia, Indonesia, and Malaysia to enhance students' international awareness and increase the global influence of our university's SPE student chapter. The chapter was awarded the Gold Standard honor by the SPE headquarters for two consecutive years in 2015 and 2016 and received the Student Chapter Excellence Award for two consecutive years in 2022 and 2023.
