Recently, the International Society for Porous Media (InterPore) awarded the InterPore Medal to Professor Yao Jun from our university, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the development of porous media science and technology in China and internationally, as well as his academic exchanges. He is the fourth scholar globally to receive this award since InterPore's establishment, and Professor Yao Jun is the first scholar in China to receive this honor.

Professor Yao Jun

Between 2010 and 2020, Professor Yao Jun served as the head of the Permeation Mechanics Specialty Group of the Chinese Society of Mechanics, making significant contributions to the internationalization of permeation mechanics in China. He widely promoted the development and achievements of permeation mechanics in China to the international community, thus accelerating the rapid development of permeation mechanics in the country. In 2017, he organized the establishment of the InterPore China Chapter and served as its chairman for six consecutive years, organizing six annual meetings of the International Society for Porous Media China Chapter. He also helped our university become the first institutional member of InterPore in Asia. In 2020, Professor Yao Jun led a team to co-organize the first online InterPore conference and secured the hosting rights for the 2024 InterPore Annual Meeting at our university. This year's conference will be held in mid-May in Qingdao, marking the first time the InterPore Annual Meeting is held offline outside of Europe and America. Thanks to Professor Yao Jun's years of hard work and selfless dedication, InterPore has been widely promoted in China, with its influence steadily expanding.

Currently, Professor Yao Jun serves as the Director of the Oil and Gas Permeation Research Center. He has previously served as a member of the Fluid Mechanics Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Mechanics, the leader of the Permeation Mechanics Specialty Group, and an academic committee member of the International Society for Porous Media. He has been honored as an SPE Honorary Member and the first Fellow of the Chinese Petroleum Society, and has been consecutively selected as a Highly Cited Scientist by Clarivate Analytics. He has made significant contributions to the research and teaching of multiphase flow in porous media, proposed a theoretical framework for modern permeation mechanics, developed multiscale multiphase oil and gas permeation mechanics, and established distinctive research directions ranging from micro-nano scale permeation to large-scale fracture permeation, thereby advancing the theoretical development and engineering applications of permeation mechanics. Professor Yao Jun not only has significant academic influence and outstanding achievements in the international oil and gas permeation field but has also made notable contributions to international academic exchanges and promotion services.

The International Society for Porous Media (InterPore) was established in 2008, with members from academia and industry worldwide. Research on porous media science and engineering involves complex interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary issues and is widely present in natural and industrial systems such as soil, groundwater resources, underground oil and gas reservoirs, human and animal tissues and organs, plants, composite materials, fuel cells, concrete, ceramics, textiles, and computer and mobile phone chips. InterPore is dedicated to providing a platform for researchers in various fields to exchange ideas on complex porous media research and to promote and disseminate cutting-edge knowledge in porous media science and engineering.
