Our School's International Student Team Achieved Excellent Results in the SPE GOTECH 2024 Artificial Intelligence Hackathon

  On May 23rd, at the SPE GOTECH 2024 Artificial Intelligence Hackathon held in Dubai, UAE, a team comprised of our school's international students Asia Majid, Paulo Joaquim Nota, Osmund Edward Mwangupili, and Renatus Mahuyu achieved an outstanding third place in competition with 79 top participants globally. Asia (mentored by Yang Yongfei), Osmund (mentored by Pu Chunsheng), and Renatus (mentored by Wang Sen) are all current doctoral students in our institution.

Competition site

  GOTECH is one of the series of conferences in the Middle East organized by SPE, hosted by Longyou Group (a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company), and sponsored by the Dubai Supreme Energy Council. The objective of this hackathon competition was to provide a platform for participants to showcase their expertise in machine learning. Participants were tasked with predicting key parameters such as water and oil retention, flow rate, pressure, using the provided OH and CH logging records, as well as historical PLT logging records. To ensure fairness in model validation, participants were restricted to using the provided datasets for model development. The core aim of the hackathon was to evaluate the capabilities of artificial intelligence in predicting production profiles from one well to another within a specific region, identifying inter-well connectivity, and predicting optimal new well locations.

Team members and award winners

  During the award ceremony, our school's external expert and Longyou Group's Senior Technical Advisor, Professor Omar Al-Farisi, personally awarded the winning team to acknowledge their outstanding performance and remarkable contributions to the application of artificial intelligence in the field of petroleum engineering. This competition not only showcased the innovative capabilities and teamwork of our school's international student team but also brought honor to our institution and discipline in the international academic community.
