On the evening of September 24, the annual awards dinner of the International Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) 2024 Annual Technology and Exhibition Conference was held in New Orleans. Professor Sun Baojiang of China University of Petroleum (East China) won SPE Distinguished Member Award 2024 for his innovation and contribution in multiphase flow theory and well control technology in deepwater deep drilling wellbore.

The International Association of Petroleum Engineers spoke highly of Professor Sun Baojiang's academic contributions in the field of petroleum. Professor Sun Baojiang has been focusing on wellbore multiphase flow theory and wellbore pressure control technology in deepwater deep drilling engineering for 36 years, and has made outstanding contributions to petroleum industry in supercritical gas-liquid-solid multiphase flow theory, adaptive dynamic well killing drilling and wellbore pressure safety control technology.

Prof. Sun Baojiang Receives Outstanding Member Award of International Association of Petroleum Engineers
Sun Baojiang, Distinguished Professor of Changjiang Scholar (2009), Chief Scientist of National 973 Project and Basic Science Center Project and National Model Teacher, has been engaged in research on wellbore multiphase flow theory and control technology for a long time. Aiming at the difficult problems of complex multiphase flow simulation and wellbore pressure real-time control in deep water drilling and completion, he innovated the internationally influential multiphase flow theory of multicomponent multiphase wellbore, invented the well control technology and equipment of dynamic well killing drilling in deep water. It has developed key technologies of full-process fine pressure control drilling and SUN-Drilling software, promoted the development of wellbore pressure control technology, and won 1 second prize of National Technological Invention Award, 1 second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 9 first prizes of Provincial and Ministerial Science and Technology Progress Award, Outstanding Engineer Award of China Science and Technology Foundation, etc.

SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers), founded in 1957, is the largest and most influential academic organization in the upstream field of the global oil and gas industry, with nearly 130,000 members in 145 countries around the world. Established in 1983 to recognize outstanding achievements in the oil and gas industry or academia and significant contributions to SPE, the Distinguished Member Award is one of SPE's highest awards.
According to SPE 2024 Technology and Exhibition Conference, Liu He, academician of China Academy of Engineering, Yang Tao, academician of Norway Academy of Engineering and other Chinese scientists won SPE 2024 Production and Operation Technology Award and Outstanding Service Award respectively. In addition, an academic paper published by Professor Qu Hai of Chongqing University of Science and Technology won Cedric K. Ferguson Award.
